What Readers Are Saying
A living manual for the renaissance of an eminent African country!
Thabo Mbeki President of South Africa, 1999–2008
Nick Kochan Author, journalist, global economic expert
Olusegun Aganga has written an insightful analysis of Nigeria’s economy, politics and culture, and also has suggested some important guidelines and routes for its leaders to follow to convert the country’s huge potential into reality.
“Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa” is a call to action to Nigeria’s leaders, its professional class and its people to grasp the opportunity for change, so that they might create long-term growth, improve their lot and deal with the many woes that need to be tackled, of which one of the greatest is the extent of poverty in the country and continent.
Mr Aganga’s vision is both humane and based on fundamental principles of economics, which is his expertise. He writes with the authority of a long-time practitioner having been in banking and in Nigerian politics.
This book is strengthened by the author’s commitment to his mission and he shows in this book how personally involved he is, bringing his skills and experience to the service of his country.
But this is more than just a personal reminiscence, it is also a very practical handbook for change. He indicates what needs to be done with the economy, the state organisations, the religious institutions, education, healthcare, law and order, to name just a few.
“Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa” is essential reading both for Nigeria’s leaders and Africa’s rulers if the continent shall regain its direction and achieve its potential. They have no time to waste to pick it up and absorb its lessons and messages.
Olujimi Morgan, Geo-Politics Analyst and Chartered Accountant
A blueprint for taking Nigeria and Africa from potential to posterity indicates the present, whilst admitting the failure of the past, to expectations about the future. Whilst posterity denotes an ongoing state of well-being. It is not momentary. It is continuous.Accordingly,
I read the book with those expectations in mind. Expectations based upon my knowledge of the author, Olusegun Aganga, and his passion for the Nigeria project as well as the protection of the African peoples. He founded the Nigeria Leadership Initiative bringing together highly accomplished and credible Nigerians in Nigeria and in the Diaspora to contribute to the significant transformation of Nigeria.
As Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Economic Management Team, and thereafter Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, he initiated government policies and championed the rejection of non-beneficial foreign agreements to Nigeria and Africa, led the efforts to make Nigeria the number 1 investment destination in Africa, and created the Sovereign Wealth Fund.
Nosa Igbinadolor Development Economist and Policy Analyst
Reclaiming The Jewel of Africa clearly elucidates the dominant development questions of the day in Nigeria. Even better, the book provides the answers to these questions in an unvarnished and coherent manner.
The author uses contemporary economic history, political and economic paradigms and common sense to make his points; points devoid of intellectual technicalities and academic verbiage. It is what makes the book easy to read, easy to understand and easy to accept.
It is a book that would delight public policy connoisseurs in the continent eager to harvest the finest of recipes to lift development outcomes in their countries.
